Call Of Duty Black Ops

A week in and I just wanted to update the world on how DOA are faring with COD:BO.

In the majority, we are very happy. Personally, I love the game. In single player I am slogging through on Veteran – finding time is hard as I am loving the Multiplayer on Hardcore.

The maps, in my opinion, are the best set of maps released with any FPS game – a good mix of small, medium and large with a great lack of “perfect” sniper spots. The new ranking system as well gives new players an easy way into get the guns they need, without being at a disadvantage.

One of our members though has real problems with lag – strange though as he is on a 40mb Infinity connection. He has installed to the HD but still getting issues – every other game he plays in fine….

Of course there are the known problems of getting a large party into a game together, but Treyarch are working on a patch as far as we know.

Zombie mode is enjoyable as always and the wealth of hidden extra’s on the Console in the Menu chamber is immense, of course the DOA Mode still holds a place close to our hearts!

When all said and done, it seems Treyarch has finally managed to deliver a great game, both for on and offline play.

Day one sales for Black Ops have 5.6 million copies and in money terms that means 360 million dollars. YES. 360 million dollars….

Modern Warfare 2 sold a measly 4.7 million copies (in comparison) within the first 24 hours. Activision have stated this is the “biggest launch in entertainment” even overtaking the opening weekend set by the film Avatar last year.

DOA Elite are enjoying the game immensely, albeit with a few server side issues which I am sure will be ironed out.

Yep, you heard right – not related to us of course but Cod: Black Ops has a secret “DOA” mode – Dead Ops Arcade!

To get it is simple and you get a couple of extras too: An Achievement and a Gamer Picture!

So, on main menu when you are sat in the chair, keep clicking LT and RT at the same time. After a sec, your character gets up – Achievement Unlocked!!

The, go around to the left and approach the small computer in the left hand corner of the room, Press X and then use the keyboard to enter DOA, press enter.

Thats it! The top down shooter loads up and you press A to start ( after a few seconds…..prompt in bottom right corner). SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET!

Try ZORK or 3arc Unlock for: Zork mode, Dead Ops Arcade mode, the ‘Five’ Zombie mode map and all the missions.

You can type help in the console for a list of other commands… ENJOY!

With the release date approaching, it seems fitting to discuss some of the new modes COD has to offer for the multiplayer gamer.

IGN have posted a great article discussing the new modes and to ease you into it, we have broken them down the one-line basics!

One in the Chamber
One Pistol, one bullet. Kill with your shot and your bullet is refreshed, miss and you are only left with a knife!

Gun Game
20 Levels, everyone has the same gun for each level, new guns in the next round. If you get stabbed, you go back a level.

Sharpshooter
Everyone starts with the same weapon, Weapons for everyone rotate every 45 seconds. Kill to survive.

Combat Training

2 player ONLINE training – or via split screen – learn the maps with a friend against BOTS.

It’s out, right on time and it’s a big one. The new Fall 2010 Xbox Live Dashboad update is being rolled out right now in preparation for Kinect when it arrives in stores on 10th November. The update includes Netflix search, Zune music, an ESPN entertainment hub, and much much more.

Thursday I got myself totally and utterly stuck into the new Special Edition of Angry Birds – Halloween Edition.

I checked Youtube to see if anyone had put the level guides up for three stars, low and behold I couldn’t see any. This was my mission this weekend, to get all of the new 45 levels three stared up with a video on each level on how I achieved them.

Look no further, It was finished on Sunday afternoon, and I had some great fun doing it, and some quite tricky levels.

There are some great games available on the iPhone, Angry Birds, Cut the Rope and Doodle Jump to name a few.

Breaking into the market must be a daunting prospect for any developer – find the right mix of fun and replayability, spiced up with a unique twist seems to be the recipe most look to create.

Coastal Super Combat is a game in this mould. Genre wise, it is sort of a cross between a Castle Defence and FPS game. A good mix of ingredients if you ask me, but how does it stack up?

Like many other iPhone games, CSC has chosen the cartoon style feel. It works really well, with clean lines and simple characters, visually it’s a pleasure. The menu system is also pleasing to the eye, with mechanical doors and smooth touch screen “flick” menus this makes navigating through the game a breeze.

The idea is a simple one – prevent the enemy invaders from reaching your base. The player view is side on “platform” affair, with all the game play buttons well placed and identified – and that’s a good thing, as later missions require lightening fast reactions. Main weapon selection is achieved by clicking the arrows on the right, while pressing the “Fire” button between them unleashes the ammo. Aiming is easy by simply dragging the virtual Weapon to wherever you need to shoot.

The play area can also be scrolled left and right by tilting your device – this does become slightly awkward when trying to move, shoot and tilt while also reaching for the Air-strike or the Nuke….. That said, it all adds to the frantic game play further into the career.

Completing levels earns you gold, which in turn can be used to purchase a variety of weapons and repair or upgrade your base. Spend wisely, power ups are not cheap and you also need to keep those chosen weapons stocked with Ammo! Of course, like most multi-weapon games, you do get a base-level rifle with infinite ammo – this will NOT be sufficient later on however…..

Enemy wise, there are infantry, vehicles, snipers, RPG agents and more to contend with – 11 varients in all – a good tactic in the heat of a battle is to shoot the vehicles, when they blow, the surrounding troops in the blast zone are killed – again, handy later on in the game.

With the multitude of weapons and power-ups, tied in with sweet cartoon visuals, this is a good effort from Triniti Interactive. There are of course going to be comparisons with other titles such as Coast Defence and Stick Wars, but in my opinion, the well executed cartoon style of this game adds the extra rating points.

With over 100 levels to play, there is plenty of missions to keep you going, although the action can become a little repetitive. Lack of difficulty is also a minor issue as most players will be able to complete the game without too much trouble. For the Achievement collectors around, Openfeint is supported.

In terms of “Best in Class”, I suspect most will favour Zombie Smash – it is truly a great game and nails it, both on Genre and iPhone gaming overall – keep an eye on www.doaelite.co.uk for a review of Zombie Smash coming soon!

The sequel to Fallout 3, the 2008 Game Of The Year no less, is finally here. Fallout: New Vegas hits UK shelves on 22nd October 2010

The long awaited game has already released in the US, causing a bit of a storm after gamers reported a ton of bugs within the game. The development team have confirmed they are working hard on a patch to rectify the problems as soon as they can – the worry is that this seesm to be the way gaming is going these days.

Nearly every recent release has shipped with incredible bugs that should have been picked up in testing – It seems that software houses know that the game will still sell on release schedule and that they CAN offer a patch. Surely what gamers want is final product, not a beta release?

With all that said, Fallout: NV promises to follow up on its GOTY relative and will surely be too big a name to have a few release problems affect the predicted top of the charts, backed up with a TOP 9/10 review from IGN

Minigore is a very simple game. Run around, shoot and survive. Thats it.

For a game with such a simple premise, it has a depth of gameplay that ensures you have one more go.

First of, lets start with the eye-candy. It’s clear from the off that the stylised cartoon theme of Minigore has great appeal. The characters are fun and with every kill we are given some comically gruesome bloodshed. Smooth frame-rate adds to the feel of the game, always leaving you to concentrate on getting as high a score as possible.

The basic map design does leave a little to the imagination, especially as obstacles are visual only, allowing you to move freely around the board. That said, again the style and graphics lend a hand giving the impression of much more detail. Off-screen indicators show you where the next danger is coming from, not that it helps later on when enemies are a plenty and the blood is flying.

Random clover leaves appear on the screen, again identified with an off screen indicator – collect three of these and you will be transformed into an unstoppable giant!

A bunch of unlockable characters allow you to add a visual variety, but with only a couple of maps, don’t expect to be discovering new levels for weeks to come. As far as the opposition goes, a few different types of enemies await, meaning you have to shake up your tactics during the round. Get bitten twice and it’s curtains!

Developers Chillingo have kept the updates coming, adding themed characters like Santa and the Easter Bunny, as well as visual variants on the maps you already know.

Don’t anticipate to be on this one for hours at a time – but as a pick up and play to while away some time, what more can you ask than to be able to blow away beasties in the woods?
